Invading North Carolina
Mission in North Carolina
I participated in a large-scale military exercise simulating a North Carolina invasion, involving all branches of the armed forces. My role was to act as a downed crew member: after being dropped off by an H-1, I used a survival radio to signal for rescue, directing a CH-54 helicopter with fighter cover to my location. The operation felt very authentic. All of the expected fighter cover overhead was used, too. Each of my pickups used at least six airplanes. Highlights included coordinating the rescue and witnessing the impressive sight of the Atlantic fleet—about a hundred ships—off the coast. During the exercise, I was stationed at a Marine base and enjoyed free drinks at the Officers’ Club. Area
