Are You Crazy, is Information Really a Thing?
In modern physics, information is fundamentally real. It is not just an abstract concept but a tangible, physical entity. Physicists have demonstrated that information cannot be destroyed, and processing or deleting it requires energy and has measurable physical consequences, such as altering a system’s mass.
The reality of information key concepts:
- Information is Physical: It isn’t just information ‘about’ something. It is something.
- Reality is built from structural information and quantum states, making information more fundamental than matter or energy.
- Conservation of Information: A quantum system’s future and past are strictly tied to its characteristics, meaning information about the universe’s history is never truly lost.
- The Holographic Principle: Research in black holes and string theory suggests that the maximum amount of information that can be stored in a region of space is proportional not to its volume, but to the surface area of its boundary—much like a 2D hologram projecting a 3D image.
- Some theorize that a Black Hole ceases to exist when all of its information has ‘leaked away,’ through Hawken’s Radiation.
information is a foundational, real component of the cosmos.
