Are You Crazy, is Information Really a Thing?
In modern physics, information is fundamentally real. It is not just an abstract concept but a tangible, physical entity. Physicists have demonstrated that information cannot be destroyed, and processing or deleting it requires energy and has measurable physical consequences, such as altering a system’s mass.
The reality of information key concepts:
- Information is Physical: Information is not merely about something; it is itself a physical part of reality. Information is as real as the object it describes.
- Reality: Reality may be built from structural information and quantum states, making information more fundamental than matter or energy. Information can’t be measured in the same sense as physical objects.
- Conservation of Information: A quantum system’s past and future are bound to its properties, so information about the universe’s history is never truly lost. Even black holes contain information about all of the matter that was absorbed.
- The Holographic Principle: Black hole and string theory research suggests a region’s maximum information content depends on the surface area of its boundary, not its volume—similar to a 2D hologram representing a 3D image.
- Hawking’s Radiation: Some theorists propose that a black hole disappears once all its information has escaped through Hawking radiation. Hawking radiation Hawking radiation is a theoretical phenomenon predicting that black holes emit faint thermal radiation due to quantum effects near the event horizon. Because this radiation carries energy, it causes black holes to slowly lose mass and eventually “evaporate” and disappear entirely over extremely long timescales.

Ray was a Senior Pilot in the US Air Force and traveled to 27 countries worldwide. His C-130 assignments ranged from landing in a farm field in Paraguay to entering East Berlin and experiencing Russian controllers giving him false headings.
Ray’s other assignment was as a T-38 instructor pilot. “The T-38 is the best plane in the world; two pilots, two engines, and two afterburners.” Two of his remarkable experiences included training the first class of female pilots and receiving an Air Commendation Medal for saving a T-38 that blew an engine during a touch-and-go, thereby saving himself and the student pilot on board.
After his Air Force career, Ray went on to enjoy a long and exciting career with Northrop Grumman. During the 28 years at Northrop, some of the highlights included work as the Lead Wind Tunnel test engineer on the F-20, F-23, F-18, and B-2. His career progressed to be the Deputy Manager of Engineering for the Tri-Service Stand-Off Attack Missile (TSSM). Later, he was responsible for all the computers at Ryan Aeronautical and then for all the computers on the B-2 Bomber program.
